Dandruff is very common scalp problem in which tiny pieces of the dry skin flake off of the scalp. If you have dark hair or you are wearing dark colors, you will notice the flakes in your hair or on the shoulders. Dandruff will also make your scalp very itch. Many of the people consider that the dandruff is main cause is the poor hygiene, but it is false. Even though infrequent shampooing can makes dandruff more obvious, researchers were still studying the main causes, which appear to be complex.
Dandruff symptoms are very easy to spot: white, oily-looking flakes of the dead skin which dot your hair & shoulders, and a possibly itchy and scaly scalp. The condition can worsen during the fall & winter, when indoor heating may contribute to the dry skin & improve during the summer.
Dandruff can have various causes, including:
Irritated, oily skin (seborrheic dermatitis): This condition is one of the most common causes of the dandruff, is marked by the greasy skin, red which is covered by flaky white or yellow colored scales. Seborrheic dermatitis can affect the scalp & other areas rich in the oil glands, like your eyebrows, the side parts of the nose & the backs of the ears, your breastbone (sternum), groin area & sometimes your armpits.
Not shampooing often enough: If you don't regularly wash the hair, oils & skin cells from the scalp may build up and causing dandruff.
Yeast like fungus (malassezia): Malassezia lives on scalps of most the adults. But, for some, it may irritate the scalp & also tends more skin cells to grow. The further skin cells will also die & fall off, and making them to appear like a white & flaky in your hair or on the clothes.
Dry skin: Flakes from the dry skin are usually smaller & less oily than those from the other causes of the dandruff. And, redness or inflammation is unlikely. You will probably have the dry skin on the other parts of the body, like your legs & arms, too.
Sensitivity to the hair care products (contact dermatitis): Sometimes sensitivities to some certain type of ingredients in the hair care products or hair dyes can also cause a itchy, red & scaly scalp.
Usually your doctor can diagnose the dandruff simply by looking at your hair & scalp.
If the causes lie on the scalp like dry skin, then simple hair oil application will be enough to cure the dandruff problem. If the cause lies in the underlying skin disease like psoriasis, treatment for causative disease will be required. In Ayurveda treatment likes hirodhara helps not only to decrease the dandruff & improves the hair quality. But also they help you to relieve the stress & lack of the sleep which are the main cause for the dandruff.
